Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) refers to a wireless system comprised of two components: tags and readers. The reader is a device that has one or more antennas that emit radio waves and receive signals back from the RFID tag.
An RFID reader functions as a radio frequency device, emitting a signal via an antenna. This signal is intercepted by RFID tags, which then react to the reader's inquiry. The reader captures these responses and, employing various protocols, establishes communication with all RFID tags within its range.
Some low frequency (LF) readers are designed to read only one tag at a time, whereas High Frequency (HF) and especially Ultra High Frequency (UHF) readers are designed to read multiple RFID tags concurrently, e.g. a stack of tagged books or a pallet of goods moving through a reader gate.
RFID Handhelds are designed to be used by moving around the devices through a workflow and collecting data. RFID handhelds can have in built screens and keyboards or can be in a sled form factor where they pair via Bluetooth to another smart device like a phone or tablet.
